5,400 Job Cuts to Hit Pentagon This Week

About 5,400 Defense Department employees will lose their jobs this week. The cuts are the first in what is expected to be a 5% to 8% reduction of the civilian workforce. The department employed 764,000 civilians as of June 2024, which means more than 61,000 people could lose their jobs. The White House also wants an 8% cut to the DoD budget.

Navy Settles Lawsuit Over Potomac Testing

A lawsuit against the US Navy regarding weapons testing on the Potomac River has been settled. The Navy will be required to obtain a Clean Water Act permit to minimize the pollution impacts from its weapons testing at Dahlgren, VA.

Pax F-35 Pilot Makes 1st Night SRVL on UK Carrier

An US Navy F-35 Lightning II test pilot from NAS Pax River performed the first night shipborne rolling vertical landing, or SRVL, aboard HMS Prince of Wales, the United Kingdom’s newest aircraft carrier, in Atlantic waters just after 9pm Oct. 29. This came after MAJ Paul Gucwa had performed the first SRVL earlier that day.

Biden Taps Franchetti to Lead Navy

President Joe Biden is set to tap ADM Lisa Franchetti to lead the Navy, which would make her the first woman to serve as a member of the military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.
