Harry Jarin, Candidate for Congress

Harry Jarin is running for the Democratic nomination for Maryland 5th District’s congressional seat currently held by Congressman Steny Hoyer who will be retiring at the end of this term.

Jarin writes:

Why do working people see Democrats as part of the problem when we’re supposed to be the party of the working class? When we didn’t present solutions to basic problems, people turned to an authoritarian populist. This is the story of many fascist movements throughout history: when people feel ignored, they look to demagogues who promise easy answers.

I’m a small business owner and a volunteer firefighter, and I see what working people deal with: rising costs, long commutes, crumbling infrastructure, and stretched public services that just don’t work anymore. I see these problems firsthand as a first responder here in Maryland, but through my work as a grant writer for fire & EMS agencies across the country, I recognize that these are systemic, national problems.

The Democratic Party can’t win back working people’s trust unless we stop sending the same lobbyists and career politicians to Washington. I don’t take money from corporate PACs or groups like AIPAC. People have lost trust in politics because they feel like everything is bought and paid for. If we’re serious about rebuilding trust, it starts with candidates who are truly independent.

In Congress, I’ll prioritize a more fair tax code that makes billionaires pay their fair share; expanding healthcare coverage so everyone can see a doctor on a regular basis without worrying about the bill; transit-oriented development policies to increase the supply of affordable housing while reducing the strain of traffic on rural communities here in St. Mary’s County; investing in infrastructure upgrades like the long-overdue Thomas Johnson bridge; and holding the Trump administration accountable for their many crimes.

Donald Trump is a symptom, but the disease in our politics is a Congress that can’t address basic issues in American society. If we want different results, we need different candidates. Take it from a firefighter: if your house is on fire, you don’t put it out by sending in the same people who stood around and let it burn in the first place. I’ll be a stronger voice for our values, and I hope to earn your support in the primary election on June 23.
