10M Jobs Added Since Jan. ’21
The US added 263,000 new jobs, marking the creation of more than 10 million new jobs since Biden took office. Also in September, unemployment dropped to 3.5%, a low not seen in more than 50 years. The unemployment rate fell across demographics, notably the Hispanic unemployment rate dropped to 3.8 percent, the lowest rate ever recorded.
Pearl Harbor’s Water Still Unsafe
The Navy urged 93,000 residents of Pearl Harbor, HI, to boil water for drinking and cooking as a precaution against bacteria, and also continue to conserve water after a fourth water main break on Monday followed three breaks on Friday of the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickman system. These same residents faced fuel contamination of their water last year from fuel leaks from JBPHH. The Navy was to begin draining that fuel Monday, but the broken mains prevent that.
SMECO Employees Help Florida Restoration Efforts
On October 2, five Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative employees drove to southwest Florida to assist in restoration efforts following a devastating blow from Hurricane Ian.
US, Canada Bolster Haiti’s Security
Canada and the United States have sent “security equipment” including tactical and armored vehicles, to the Haitian National Police to help tackle an immediate health and security crisis. Haiti PM Ariel Henry has asked the international community for military assistance to quell growing violence, gang shootouts, and looting.

The Patuxent Partnership, the catalyst for bringing a regional symposium of the Maryland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium to St. Mary’s College of Maryland, reminds students, the deadline to apply for the March 4, 2023 symposium is November 18, 2022. The JSHS program is a collaborative effort of all branches of the US military, and is always seeking mentors as well as mentees.

The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 8 election is Oct. 18. Eligible Marylanders may register to vote in advance of the Nov. 8 election using the State Board of Election’s online application page or completing an application in-person at their local board of elections office.
Navy Wants 100 Drone Ships in Middle East Waters
The Navy wants 100 unmanned ships patrolling waters around the Arabian Peninsula by the end of the summer of 2023. Most systems will come from international partners according to US 5th Fleet commander VADM Brad Cooper. The Navy has been testing an experimental force of long-endurance drone ships at sea with artificial intelligence tools on shore to search for military threats or illegal activity.
Gelrud Golf Tourney – Oct. 20
The Jack Gelrud Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Three Oaks Homeless Center will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022. Proceeds from the tournament benefit programs that serve the homeless population in St. Mary’s County.
