Meet Wala Blegay March 17, 1st Missionary Baptist

Wala Blegay is running for Democratic nomination for Maryland 5th District’s congressional seat, currently held by Congressman Steny Hoyer who will be retiring at the end of this term. She will be in St. Mary’s County, March 17, at 7 PM at First Missionary Baptist Church, 46370 Pegg Lane, Lexington Park, MD, to meet with Southern Marylanders.

To introduce herself as a Proven Local Leader Ready to Fight for Southern Maryland in Congress, Council Member Wala Blegay writes the following:

I am Wala Blegay, a Prince George’s County Council Member and Chair of the Board of Health. Today, I announce my candidacy for Congress in Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District, and ask residents of St. Mary’s County to join me in building a stronger, more affordable future for all of Southern Maryland.

As a Councilmember and Board of Health Chair, I improved access to healthcare and emergency room wait times, and fought for small business and economic development.  Now, I am ready to take that fight to Congress:

NAS Patuxent River.  NAS Patuxent River is an economic engine for Southern Maryland.  As your next Member of Congress, I will work to:
•   Protect Pax River from BRAC threats
•   Expand research, aviation technology, and innovation
•   Strengthen partnerships among the base, local business, and our schools
•   Expand employment for residents including veterans and young people.

Affordability.  Families, federal workers and contractors face uncertainty.  I will prioritize:
•   Fighting inflation and lowering everyday costs
•   Protecting federal jobs and contractors
•   Workforce development, defense and technology apprenticeships
•   Affordable childcare, healthcare and housing.

Small Businesses and Federal Contractors.  We have a strong ecosystem of defense contractors and local entrepreneurs. But too often, small and minority-owned firms struggle to compete.  I will fight to strengthen federal procurement programs, protect pathways for small businesses, and ensure that innovation coming out of Pax River benefits local companies — not just out-of-state corporations.

My leadership has always been grounded in listening, showing up, and delivering results.   Together, we can ensure that St. Mary’s County — and all of Southern Maryland — continue to thrive.

Please join me on Tuesday, March 17 at 7 PM at First Missionary Baptist Church, 46370 Pegg Lane, Lexington Park, MD, as we plan our future.
