The “Substance Abuse Is Devastating Our Children” community forum will begin at 6:30 pm Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, at Leonardtown High School at 23995 Point Lookout Road in Leonardtown. The event is being presented by the Narcotics Overdose Prevention Education Task Force, and is supported by Walden Behavioral Health and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital.

Newborns to Sport Red Hats at MedStar

Babies born at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown will wear red hats in February to raise awareness of congenital heart defects. People in the community are invited to knit or crochet newborn-sized hats using red cotton or acrylic yarn.

Presentation Focuses on Caring for Student Athletes

Parents of student athletes will find plenty to learn at a presentation on Jan. 23 that will focus on preventing, diagnosing, and treating sports injuries in children and young adults. The event, sponsored by MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, will be held from 6:30 to 8 pm in the auditorium of Leonardtown High School.

Give Gift of Life at Hospital Blood Drive

Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear Band-Aids and give the gift of life. Be a hero and donate blood as the American Red Cross comes to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital on Jan. 17, 2018, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm, just outside of the Outpatient Pavilion.

Tobacco Cessation Classes Start Soon

The St. Mary’s County Health Department offers free tobacco cessation classes and the next round will begin soon. The classes are being promoted by the Tobacco Free Living Action Team, a part of the Healthy St. Mary’s Partnership, supported by MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown.

Storm Brings Snow, High Winds to Region

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 11 am today, Jan. 4, and a wind chill advisory is in effect until noon Friday, Jan. 5, for St. Mary’s County. Drivers are asked to stay off the roads as high winds continue to blow snow across roadways.

Opioid Learning Series Continues in March

Several organizations will present a six-part series of events focusing on the opioid epidemic. Known as the Opioid Learning Series, sponsors for the series include the St. Mary’s County Health Department, St. Mary’s County Library, Walden Behavioral Health, and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital.
