CSM’s Drum Circle Class Sets Its Own Rhythm
The College of Southern Maryland offers close to 400 personal enrichment classes every year, and one class has its students matching rhythms and making noise. The Drum Circle class is a fun and interesting way to make friends, learn a skill, and lose oneself in the lessons.
CSM Professor Will Live Stream During Eclipse
Dr. Stephanie McCaslin, College of Southern Maryland math professor, will be live streaming from Nebraska during the solar eclipse on Aug. 21.
Poinsett Awarded for Faculty Excellence
Prof. Sandy Poinsett was honored this year with the CSM Faculty Excellence Award, an annual honor given to one member of the college’s permanent faculty. Prof. Poinsett’s award was announced at the college’s spring commencement ceremony May 18, 2017, at the La Plata Campus.
CSM Grows Innovation, Tech Opportunities
The College of Southern Maryland, along with Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland, College Park, in partnership with the Maryland Department of Commerce, have endowed $8.6 million in three new research professorships.
Studies Center Begins Archiving Materials
College of Southern Maryland’s Anna Kephart has been granted an archiving dream. As coordinator of the Southern Maryland Studies Center at CSM, Ms. Kephart has begun the process to evaluate and organize mountains of materials handed over by the Maryland Independent newspaper.
SMECO, CSM Team Up for Pre-Apprenticeship Program
Each time Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative announces a training class for apprentice linemen, hundreds of applications come in. However, many of the applicants lack the basic skills they need to even apply. To combat this problem, SMECO has teamed up with College of Southern Maryland to create a pre-apprenticeship program.

Golf Classic Funds Scholarships, Programs
It’s time for the region’s golfers to get ready for the College of Southern Maryland Foundation’s 26th Annual Golf Classic. The tournament is set for Aug. 10 at Swan Point Yacht and Country Club in Issue. During its first 25 years, the event has raised more than $770,000 for scholarships and CSM programs, plus it features prizes, raffles and three meals.
