The Chesapeake Bay region became the nation’s center for harvesting, processing, packing, and shipping oysters during the 19th century. This was especially true in waterfront towns on the Eastern Shore of Maryland that had railroad access. In St. Mary’s County, oyster packers got a later start.

St. Mary’s County Library reduces services due to COVID-19. Curbside will continue as it has been operating. Buildings will be closed to the public starting Friday, November 13. Plans to open the Library buildings by appointment only for computer, copier, or fax machine use will start Monday, November 16.
